Michael’s first camera was a box camera that he purchased at age 7 with two cereal boxtops and 25 cents in the late 1950’s. His first experiences with darkroom printing were at age 11 when he bought a contact printer and developer kit. He later worked on his high school yearbook in Brussels, Belgium in 1967 and 1968 where he took and developed photos for the yearbook.

His photographic work encompasses portraits and scenes he has taken during his travels across the United States and in 25 countries over the past 35 years. Michael likes to capture shapes in nature, bold and subtle, and the play between light and shadows. He finds all of this in scenes, often overlooked, yet so much a part of daily life.

Michael’s passion for travel began when his family moved to Belgium in 1967 and he has since returned to western Europe for pleasure on many occasions. His travels have also taken him to Bermuda where he lived for two years, as well as Panama, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Iceland, the Azores, Iran, Turkey, Australia, India, New Zealand, and Hong Kong.

His former experiences include service in the U.S. Navy, and careers as a petroleum geologist, and over 20 years as a life insurance agent. Michael currently lives on Amelia Island, FL with his wife, artist and author Carol Beck. His interests besides travel and photography include cooking, collecting, painting, music, songwriting, playing guitar and bass, and learning alternative methods for healing. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology from the University of New Mexico, and is a graduate of the School of Healing Arts in Nashville, Tennessee.
